National Park has been deliberately shot at with a bow and arrow and hours later when that hadn't killed him he was shot and killed by an American dentist. The killing itself is bad enough but the repercussions for Cecil's offspring are dire.

I find it strange that game rangers, guides, wild life film makers etc etc are frowned upon if they terminate a wild animals life, no matter how cruel and harsh the circumstance s - that the way it is in the bush, let nature take it's course etc, etc. Yet a hunter can pay a shedload of money to kill for a trophy and interfere with the status quo in an area and, in this...

I read this yesterday and I felt quite sick and I still cannot get the image from my mind ,Whilst such huge sums of money are offered for a KILL this will never be stamped out .
I was reading yesterday about a Hunter from Texas in The USA who offered £250.000 to Kill a Black Rhino this again is disgusting but with huge sums of money being offered no matter how poor the areas are ,when you think that people would mug their own grannies for a few Pounds. DISGUSTING.by any standard

The really tragic aspect of this story is not just that a well-known lion was killed horribly for sport, but that it is only the fact that he lion has a profile that means we get to know about it.
Had it been AN Other lion - and I don't doubt there are plenty out there - he would have died a similarly barbaric death, but we would have been none the wiser.
I think the focus should be, not on the fact that the lion killed was 'well known', but that any animal is killed in this way - that is true horror of the story.

"What makes them do it?"
You ask a simple question, that no-one so far seems to have addressed in the numerous emotive replies, so I will give you one answer in the complex causation: they are taught that they can.
Nature, humanity and morality is a very complex matrix and the 'correct' balance often leads to an almost religious intensity of disagreement.
I have never seen anyone getting as emotive about their bacon'n'eggs.

ladybirder - //But Cecil's death is why we are all reading about it Andy. Don't think for one minute that I don't care what happens to non high profile lions. //
I don't, and hopefully did not imply so.
The tragedy is that these wild animals become known by a quirk of fate, and yes, it does raise the profile of these barbaric practices, but it would be nice if no lions, or any profile, were shot for the enjoyment of people with too much money.

This is such a sad story, I think all hunting should be banned. If locals kill animals for food, that is acceptable. For people to pay large sums of money to kill an innocent animal, I believe is totally wrong.
It is so sad that Cecil's cubs may be killed by another lion. It is time something is done to hunters and poachers, who kill wild animals for money or pleasure.

Really? Lots of people get very emotive about it. A girl-student sat in a pig cage all day in the middle of Tubingen recently, to demonstrate against their treatment, and I avoid pork products for the same reason. Even so, they are at least eaten by some humans, which is quite different from the slaughter of a fine wild animal for 'sport'.

Sadly, that is a certainty.
It happens in nature, which is the way lions have evolved, but to precipitate the deaths of several more animals by the 'sport' of killing one simply adds to the barbarity of this practice.

No surprise. Another big thick American ignoramus. His wife must think he is a real hero having sneaked up in the dark to shoot a poor defenseless animal in the back. And this is the type of stupid brainless twit that is typical of most yanks. He is just following the steps of their government who appear to be bombing all over the world and creating mass civilian causalities.
