My 9 year old daughter tells me that the answer to this question can be found in Book 6 - HP and the Half-Blood Prince...this is hearsay, of course, but she is sure of this.  Happy reading Sirius!!!
I suspect its highly unlikely that Snape is evil. Everything he does is entirely in keeping with him being Dumbledore's spy and is working for the greater good, even down to the rather major event for which he is apparently responsible at the end.
well, he is a death eater but len he made the umbrakeable vow so he had to.. well, i think he is
I keep choping and changing on this one, after reading HBP i though yea, but then i listned to other ppl theorys and i now think that he's not evil (well thats what i think at the min)
I agree with Waldo, I think we will find that Snape did his evil deed for a good reason. On careful re-reading, I think that Dumbledore was really asking him to do what he did because it will somehow provide extra power or protection for Harry in book 7.
After reading the book I was positive that Snape was a bad guy, but after reading I was discussing it on a forum and I was amazed to find out that some peopel didn't share my opinion.  Here is what they thought when Dumbledore is pleaded  with Snape it isn't not kill but to kill him. In the book Dumbledoresays nothing abou tnot killing him, so I guess it could go either way.  The book also says that Snape looked at Dumbledore with revulsion and hatred that may not mean he hated Dumbledore, but hated what Dumbledore was asking him to do. This probably added mor to your confusion of whether Snape is good or bad, but it is something that must be taken in to consideration before you decide.

He gave his word to protect Malfoy from evel, killing Dumbledore would have gotten Malfoy into Voldemort`s hands if you understand what I mean. He had to protect Malfoy after all...... He could have done it with Dumbledore`s approval in some way to keep his cover.....but I think the chance that he is good after what he has done is not that high. But there has to be some good in him for protecting Malfoy.....and he saved Harrys life again in telling the other death eater that Voldemort wants him......he could have just let it happen.

Its wishful thinking that he is good, or lets say not really evil, I dont want him to be evil, but who knows what joanne has planned....she surprises us a lot.
