Why were roman numerals used to show when the film was made? The film industry was forward thinking and cutting edge so why use such an outdated format?

Appears to be so that the viewer doesn't realise just how 'old' the film or production is.

Thanks, Ken, it's obvious now it's been pointed out, I didn't realise that roman numerals were still being used.
They use them for the superbowl too.
This year was LVII.....

They are numbered the first one was 1967.
