I have in the ear earphones ,and for some reason the right one is receiving sound but only just whereas the left is ok. Is there some way I can adjust the right one please? I have had them for a long time.

If the earphones themselves have developed a fault, there's almost certainly nothing you can do about it. But sometimes you'll experience the type of problems you report if the earphones simply aren't plugged in properly. (Have you tried wiggling the plug about?).

Chris: Isn`t there a programme on the PC that I can alter the speakers from L-R?

look to see if its blocked with wax this can occur frequently

its a natural occurring thing nothing to do with being "mucky" lol

deggers: yep, perfectly ok. I`ll treat myself to a new pair from Poundland.
Seeing that no-one has mentioned it yet, you can alter the balance between speakers/ ear pieces by going to Contol Panel then Sounds and Audio Devices.
Wak's information is only correct if the sound card in your computer supports it. Most 'on board' sound chips won't do so (but it might be worth taking a look anyway).
