Does anyone here have one in their garden?
If you do, is it a 'proper' one or is it a fibreglass fishing pole, and what do you fly on it?

Was it easy to erect mally?

Good for you for flying all the relevant flags 👍

mr mally cemented it in and the pole is in segments and just slot in to each other x

Thanks mally x

We had one. It was white painted wood with weather vane on top. Flags flown were Union Jack, St. George or local cricket club. There was a mechanism for lowering it perpendicular to the ground for cleaning etc

how pointless

I have a small one on the top of the Garage. I fly the union flag most of the the time but I also fly the SGC and other flags on the appropriate days.  Oddly enough I cringe when I drive around where I live and see the union flag being flown upside down but at least they are flying it.

"Oddly enough I cringe when I drive around where I live and see the union flag being flown upside down..."

So do I. It's not odd at all. Flying the Union Flag upside down really gets my goat.

"It doesn' really matter" is the usual cry. It does. Could you imagine flying the Stars & Stripes upside down. Those unable to tell its top from its bottom should not fly it.

I'm not sure which is worse - flying the Union Flag upside down or the inappropriate use of apostrophes.

Flying the Union flag upside down is a sign of distress for the numpties who know no better.

I have a sectional fibre glass flagpole about 5 metres on my garage. I always fly a small white ensign but larger St George, Union, Help fo Heroes, RAF, Royal Marine flags as anniversaries present themselve. The Royal Marines flag is flown on Zeebrugge Day. An important date in R.M. History should anyone care to know.

I do have a Falkland Islands flag for the 14th June.

Fun fact, we often make a joke about bombing the white flag factory to defeat the French, well from 1815-30 their flag was white, honest guv!

I remember when Ian Paisley first took his seat at the European Parliament. The first thing he said was (imagine the booming ulster accent!):

Mr Speaker, when I walked into this building, I had to bear the insult of seeing the flag of my country flying upside down!

That was his first speech in Brussels! 😊

I wouldn't know (or care) if the Union flag was flown up, down or sideways!

Thanks for all the interesting and informative answers, much appreciated.

I just have to persuade OH that he needs one, really, really needs one, in our garden 😉

17:02, 18:27 then why join in this thread just to be a troll?
