My Brother Died This Week.

So have been up to near Bolton for a couple of days with my daughter. We made a start on the house. Took lots of boxes of food to food banks.
He was a hoarder. We made a start on clearing things. I started on his clothes. What a job, so many things. Over a hundred sweaters. About 30 shirts gone to tip. So much dust on shoulders, about 30 pairs of trousers. Some never worn.
We had about 15 plastic bags of clothes going to charities, and about the same going to the tip.
He was a recluse, never went out, so why all the new clothes? All bought from ASDA.
He also hoarded coins. Umpteen bags of coins dated 1947 his date of birth.
Bags of sixpences, shillings, two shilling pieces, and loads of coppers.
When we came home daughters car was loaded up to the roof with bags and boxes. We will go up again next week and do some more sorting. The funeral will probable be early June because of sudden death. He wouldn't make a will but luckily we know what he wanted. He had quite large sum of money and a large 3 bed semi house. So we are in for quite a time of work.

sorry to hear that, Caran, please accept my sympathy. Cleaning up and arranging is hard work; I'm still doing it more than a year on.

Unfortunately, although you say 'we know what he wanted', if he died without a will, then what happens will follow the rules of intestacy. Official advice here:

I'm his next of kin but he wanted everything to go to his niece, my daughter.

Sorry to read about your brother and what has been left for you to clear up .. making a memo not to hoard .... I did once hear of someone who cleared his house ( he knew he had not long to live)
apart from the very basic essentials so that his niece would not have the trouble after he passed on. Maybe he did the right thing?

Sorry to hear your brother has died Caran, I remember you telling us about him a while ago.
I decided some time ago that I would do a huge declutter so my daughters wouldn't have to do it after I'm gone.
It's not an easy job. My condolences to you.

Sorry to hear that Caran. I had a similar experience when my sister died. There were only three members of close family, so we did the same thing as you with all the belongings. It really saddened me because I felt as though I was throwing her life away. RIP.

My condolences caran. My late uncle was a bachelor all his life. Too busy caring for others. He was also a hoarder and was always conned into the value of BOGOFS. He would buy into model tanks,aeroplanes, die cast models of every kind including the Stobarts collection. Book club and DVD collections everywhere and cupboards full of tinned foods. The bonus for me was cases of whisky in the large cupboard under his stairs. He used to drink his ‘two fingers’ every night before retiring. By my estimation he would have outlived Methuselah by the time he got through about 15 cases. I much prefer Irish so gave all the Scotch away. Most of it was Teachers Cream which was the pits.
Loads of his clothes were stylish and hardly worn
The unfortunate and penniless in Barnstaple would have been the nattiest dressed in Devon. :-)
