kind of sourced from the News side but it's general so posting it here.

Can you be proud of something you had no hand in?

Can you be proud to be born in England even if you had no say in the matter?
Can you be proud to be gay or straight ?
Can you be proud to be black or white or whatever?
Can you be proud to be bald or ginger?

I'm proud of my achievements but it doesn't make sense to me to be proud of something of which I had no control.

Agreed, Paul
But so many people press for an 'absolute' answer.........shades of grey are unsatisfactory.
Am I ashamed of being
- born in England....no
- white..........no.
-.gay.......no.
I'm not sure that there is any inordinate amount of 'pride' attached to any of them, either...

I get you JTH, and I suppose in minority groups this 'pride' could simply be a statement of 'no I'm not ashamed' which should absolutely be declared if questioned.

It's just a shame the same statement can be used in an aggressive manner too for some groups without an obvious differentiation.
