Why after 51 years of screening 'Doctor Who' was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place?
/// The decision to remove the first lesbian encounter in the show’s 51-year history has angered gay rights campaigners, who accused executives of giving into homophobia. ///

It' all a bit of a non event ( at least until the BBC decided to remove the scene) and tbh if it was a 'lesbian kiss' it was the least erotic thing I've ever seen. It was an air exchange between two lesbian characters, not quite the same thing, nothing erotic or sexual about it at all. Should it have been removed because someone's sensibiities got upset? No because...

SP, he wrote, "if I had been tied up in my chair and forced to watch such rubbish, the scene would have gone over my head completely without me showing any form of offence, except being forced to watch it." which, to me at least, is his saying he would not have been offended by the scene.
I have got no idea what the point of his question is and he cannot explain it to me either.

/// That bit about 'offending some Asian audiences' is simply wrong. ///
/// You should read the report in the Daily Mail for the specifics as to why the scene was removed. ///
I did I also read the Daily Mail's headline
*** to avoid offending Asian audience ***
*** was cut to avoid falling foul of a broadcasting code in Singapore which says programmes should avoid any content that could ‘justify’ homosexual and lesbian lifestyles. ***
Could not the Singapore authorities who brought in these Broadcasting Codes, also be deemed 'Asian audiences'?

/// It seems important to him, and the six people who complained to the BBC, but everyone else seems to have taken it it their stride. ///
It seems that it is you who hasn't read the Daily Mail report, I have and I fail to see where it mentions six people who are offended, even I have not said that I am offended, but because the BBC cut the scene they are being accused of homophobia, when they cut it because of some Asian countries non acceptance of homosexuality.
/// We often hear about 'level playing fields' on AB, so why this so-called kiss should be of any consequence to the OP is beyond me. ///
It is you who are digging the ruts in this so called level playing field, for the umpteen time Dr Who, the Kiss, Lesbians etc, etc are of no consequence to me.
/// I, as well as many others, are baffled by the driver behind this thread. ///
"BECAUSE IT WAS A STORY PRINTED IN THE DAILY MAIL", and i thought it would make a good discussion, but as usual as in such cases it has now become more about the OP than the item under discussion.
/// AOG - leaving aside the fact that this wasn't a lesbian kiss - if it were, would you have a problem with it's inclusion in the show. ///
/// And if so - why? ///
Again! Again! and Again, Since I do not watch Dr Who I could care less if it was included in the show or not, but I question the fact for the need by the BBC to include it, if in their wisdom they later knew that they would have to remove it for some audiences?
So now can we put an end to all this clutter as I am now becoming rather bored with the whole matter of Doctor Who, Madame Vastra and FlintLesbian kisses, same-sex love, exchanges of oxygen, Lizard women, Jane Ray, George Dixon, the BBC, Gay rights campaigners, Peter Thatchet, Richard Lane, Stonewall, some ABers, Bigotry and Homophobia accusations, and Asian audiences,

Yes it is better for you and sp1814 to discuss this matter amongst your two selves, because it seem you are both of the same mind set, and although I have tried countless times, I cannot help you out further, it is now your problem so help each other out, or both go for a lie down and try and forget it.

I have no idea why you have become so het up about a show you have no interest in.
The vast majority of respondents on this this thread are equally stumped.
I can only assume that you feel that lesbians spoil sci-fi in the same way that black people spoil drama.
Not sure if I've read you right, but if that is indeed the crux of your argument (your reference to 'PC' was my clue there), then so be it.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion - even when it's an opinion based on a TV show that they have not even seen.

AOG question 'Why after 51 years of screening 'Doctor Who' was there any need to include a Lesbian scene in the first place? '
answer 'a) it was not a lesbian scene.
The plot involved the members of the cast holding their breath to avoid been detected by the current 'baddies'. One of the cast had trouble holding their breath and was in danger of gasping and endangering the other members -so female lizard gave 'kiss of life' to female member of cast allowing her to remain holding her breath and not be killed by the 'baddies'. Hope this lurid lesbian scene has not excited or offended too many people .It was removed by the BBC for the sole purpose of enabling the programme to be sold in certain Asian countries

/// You asked why the scene needed to be included in the first place. ///
/// The answer is that it was part of the plot. ///
Then if it was all that important to the plot why bother cutting it from the Asian version, would they then not be able to follow the plot?
Just like removing the 'punch line' from a joke.

Here we go, I wondered how long it would be before the word 'Black' was brought into play, still carrying around that enormous chip are we?
