Yes rules are rules but they need to be tempered with common sense in these sorts of cases. This is essentially the anti British using an old lady for their political ends.
The law should be applied without fear or favour - and it is clearly being applied to the letter in this case.
That said, there must be some room for common sense and compassion - that someone is not disadvantaged to the level that this lady will be - by application of a law designed to prevent young healthy immigrants from latching onto our seriously over-generous benefits systems.
I hope that Sqad is proved correct - and outrage can make a change here - it is clearly appropriate that it does.

The 'blinkered' aspect of my opinion is a matter of opinion - not sure why you think that, since I have agreed with the OP.
If the lady was black, the Human Rights activists may well have been seen in protest - but she isn't, so that rather negates your point, as I have already advised.
