The Stockport murder trial begins today - those with something to hide no doubt regard Inauguration Day as a good day to bury bad news...
I've just googled and there appears to be nothing in terms of news coverage. Wow, wow and thrice WOW!
Didn't the lives of those children count for anything?

I don’t think so. From what I’ve heard, his change of plea came as a complete surprise to everybody, including he judge and his own barrister.
One thing to bear in mind is that his guilty plea will entitle Mr Rudakubana to a discount off any tariff the judge sees fit to impose. The normal discount for a change of plea “at the door of the courtroom” on trial day is 10%. I hope the judge does not place too much weight on "sparing the families the trauma of a trial."
In any case, I don’t think Mr Rudakubana’s time inside - however long it may be – will be particularly comfortable. Prisoners tend not to look too favourably on people who stab to death six, seven and nine year old girls (and who would have killed quite a few more had he been more proficient).
"...is the "discount" automatic newjudge or is it discretionary?"
It's automatic and actually enshrined in legislation (s73 of the Sentencing Act, 2020). But judges have wide discretion, especially where longer sentences are involved. Section 73 includes this:
(2)The court must take into account the following matters—
(a)the stage in the proceedings for the offence at which the offender indicated the intention to plead guilty, and
(b)the circumstances in which the indication was given.
I think the judge might consider that a change of plea at such a late stage and with no notice (even to his own barrister) warrants very little in the way of discount.
"I hope he is forced to stand and listen to the victim impact statements"
they did this for jeffrey dahmer i think. it would certainly be appropriate but dahmer famously took off his glasses so he wouldn't need to look at them. i suspect AR would do something similar... his behaviour today has been strange judging by the reports
