How would the BBC have known if he has no previous convictions?

It is called character assessment I believe. It is a useful skill, but crucial if you are recruiting high profile employees to a tax funded broadcasting outfit. One poor choice, maybe two or three over the years is understandable, but a consistant pattern of "wrong" types is indicative of something very wrong in the organisation. He knew who he was "dealing" with but do we know if "information" was part of his deals? 

They employ thousands of people in hundreds of departments. 

It seems obvious this is not a terrorist sympathiser.

Just a greedy or perhaps desperate business person that didn't want to turn down a lucrative sale.

He will be punished accordingly.
