Spains foreign minister has suggested that the UKs future relationship with the EU depends on talks linked to resolving Gibraltar's status ,as Keir Starmer chases a EU deal.          Will Starmer say "No way Jose"  Or will he do anything to re/join the EU.???

The shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel has said: ''Gibraltar is British, end of, and we will remind the government exactly where the sovereignty of Gibraltar lies.'

As far as I can tell the government hasn't commented.

Do any abers think Gibraltar is worth arguing about ??

Starmer might not - he has no qualms about giving British territory away - but I don't think he's an ABer.

Starmer might be an 'aber'.

I can't see him finishing any crosswords himself!

Yes, Gibraltar is worth fighting over, the Treaty of Utrect is still valid.  The people of Gibraltar voted to remain British twice and of course it is a vital defence for the British navy.

If the Gibs want to stay British they should do so...

I suppose Gibaltar was important when Britain ruled the waves so it is believed.  But over the last 14 years they haven't been able to even rule the English Channel.

They WOULD have been able if our lords & masters had given them the remit.

It's a handy wee home from home if one tires of tapas and Rioja on the Costa del Sol on ones holidays.

Got a Morrisons and everything.

There are a few Spanish enclaves claimed by Morocco so perhaps they could sort them out before looking at Gibraltar?

when u say 'we' are you finally revealing where you live?

Oh good. Maybe that'll finally make the government realise how the softly softly/whatever you want is fine,  doesn't work with the EU, they just demand more & more.  If the EU doesn't want improved relations and mutually beneficial agreements then we can tell them to go boil their collective heads and to stew in the resulting juice.

The government are continually told by the citizens that there's a whole world out there. No point the government debasing the UK to EU eyes, grovelling in the hope they'll suddenly learn how to be reasonable.  We should have left "no deal/no payments" from the start.

Hopefully thats the end of Starmer's grovelling to them.

Does anyone know why we actually own Gibraltar in the first place?

It would be a bit weird if Spain owned an island in the Hebrides as some hangover of colonial times.

I should imagine we'd be wanting it back and continually saying so.

“Does anyone know why we actually own Gibraltar in the first place?”

Gibraltar was captured by the British Fleet in 1704 during the war of the Spanish Succession. In 1713 the Treaty of Utrecht was signed, concluding that war. The treaty granted sovereignty of Gibraltar  to Britain “in perpetuity”.

“It would be a bit weird if Spain owned an island in the Hebrides as some hangover of colonial times.”

Indeed it might. It would be almost as weird as Spain holding two enclaves in North Africa which many people would think were part of Morocco:

If Spain owned an island in the Hebrides then surely we'd all accept past legal ownerships. Might make an offer to purchase though.  Nowt weird about it.

I wonder how many £billions Lammy is going to pay Spain to "accept" Gibraltar back? Can the Falklands be far behind? I'm sure the Argies are watching intently. 🙄

Starmer is a disaster for the UK. He is a typical inferiority complex sufferer & will do anything to make himself feel 'important' on the world stage : giving away Chagos, and no doubt, Gibralter, the Falklands & even the Elgin marbles.

This pathetic excuse for a politician should be removed from office forthwith.
