I was bought this phone a year ago, so not sure how to check if is enabled to switch to 4G
In my settings it's currently showing 3G when I'm searching for a signal, most people have commented that "ooh your phones 4G surely?"
But it doesn't give me that option, and I wondered how I could find out without having to go into an Apple Store.
The phone was bought outright so not like I can contact a Provider?

You've not mentioned which phone service provider you're with.
With Vodafone, large areas of Knutsford only have coverage described as 'outdoors only' or, at best, 'outdoors, variable indoors':

EE shows 'Good outdoor coverage, weak or no indoor coverage' for the area as a whole:

Three has 'No coverage' for most of Knutsford, with 'Outdoor' available in just a few local areas:

O2 shows 'Good outdoors' on the south-east side of the town but 'No Service' everywhere else:

So I doubt that you've got any usable 4G coverage where you are, which would explain why your phone doesn't offer it to you!
It could be worse though. Here in Suffolk, 3G is considered a luxury in many parts of the county, with 2G still being the best that some areas can get. (There are also still quite a few areas with absolutely no mobile phone signal at all!)

Virgin Mobile uses EE's transmitters but, although those transmitters carry 4G signals in many areas, Virgin Mobile users can't access them. The same applies to users of Asda Mobile (who also use EE's transmitters). You get what you pay for!
However some 'third party' phone providers do offer 4G, such as Tesco Mobile (who use O2's transmitters - but they've got poor 4G coverage in your area anyway).
