Just done it. You have to concentrate quite a lot, but no problem to complete the alphabet - and this is after wine and a decent G & T.! (or 2, t.b.h.)

We had the Yogh, which was the character that was replaced by z in names such as Menzies.

Thorn still exists in Icelandic, though it is a different shape. It is used to distinguish between the two pronunciations of 'th'. Welsh does something similar; 'th' represents the 'th' in path whilst 'dd' represents the sound of 'th' in them.

Nope, CORBY, but I've been well-rehearsed lately. I've gone in as a volunteer reading assistant at our local secondary school since April, and of the 7 pupils I aid (they are doing very well) I discovered that 5 did not know their alphabets (Yr. 8) so I've been teaching it to them and chanting away every week. It has overcome the vino....:)

Funnily enough, I have a degree in Russian yet cannot recite the alphabet. It has never been a problem as I have a good idea of the position of each letter in the dictionary.

@ jack daw, that's so interesting, the human brain works in strange ways sometimes. Not to be rude but are you dyslexic at all? i am and i am starting to wonder if that's why i found it so hard, i also have such a big problem with left and right, but i'm fine learning new things

Sorry, but in no way am I dyslexic. To tell the truth, at the beginning I was told I did not need to learn it off by heart as long as I knew roughly the alphabetical order, so I didn't.

Jackdaw, it is on the sign, but it exists as a font character in many typefaces. I think its original use must be something else.

thats such a good point.... what use is knowing the order of the alphabet any way? it's probably just a way to start getting children to learn
