E-mailing at Work

Hi Peeps

Can anyone advise on the following:

If two people are sending e-mails to each other from their own Hotmail accounts on a works computer (on a network system) is it possible to trace the content of the e-mail?

Would the Server computer be able to detect the content and times of use etc?

Would it be traced through the Server or through each individuals hard-drive.

Would you need to know passwords for private e-mail accounts?

If you're using hotmail under http, then yes the server could feasably track everything you read or write.

basic http sends everything unencrypted, so if your internet connection is going through a central server at work, then that server could have a program on it that listens to everything it receives. though that's probably against some human rights' law

sending information via https encrypts the channel first, so that no-one inbetween can grab the information.

Even although that could be classed as being against someones "Human Rights"...surely if someone was abusing the e-mail facility on a works computer and during work time then it would be a completely different story.

Anyway, it's a possible case of workplace bullying, so it could get messy.

The company I work for has an associated company that deal with things like computer security/forensics etc. and at a meeting once, they did mention that IF they needed to access your hotmail/yahoo mail accounts this was easily done - but I get the impression they wouldnt do so unless they thought it was being used for illegal activities.
