My partener has recently been feeling thirsty all the time,and is very tired/sleeping a lot.Are these symptoms of diabetes,i know thirst is,and peeing a lot .He is not peeing a lot though. He used to be a very heavy drinker too,could this lead to diabetes?

Heavy drinking and poor diet - and the associated problem of being overweight - can lead to diabetes.
One of my colleagues has recently been told that she has diabetes - she's about 45 - and one of her symptoms was constantly feeling very hot and sweaty.
Just out of interest missmooncat, what are you classifying as a very heavy drinker?
I was diagnosed as being Type 2 diabetic almost 2 years ago. I was shattered all the time, thirsty and having something like hot flushes. Sometimes my fingers would feel tingly. I wasn't aware of going to the loo any more than usual. I also lost about a stone and a half without really trying over six months or so. It tok a simple blood test to get it diagnosed. As the result was high I was put onto medication straight away but if it is not too bad exercise and diet are used in the first instance. After some experimenting with different combinations of tablets my blood sugar readings are now within the "normal" range and I feel much better.
Yes, I believe thirst and tiredness are two symptoms of diabetes. If your partner is reluctant to go to his GP (and many men just HATE going to a doctor), many chemists and pharmacists will do a free diabetes blood check. Lloyds Chemists do, and possibly Boots. But if he does get a positive result, for his own sake make sure he follows up with a GP visit.
missmooncat please ask your partner to take all this advice; my husband was diagnosed with type 1 a year ago. He had all these symptoms but left it until he started feeling really poorly (typical male) and ended up being sent to A&E immediately (he had to drive himself there by the way!) He is now insulin-dependant and has to inject himself, however he says he feels on top of the world compared to the way he felt last year, and he leads a perfectly normal life. Good luck to him.
