I doubt if the scanners at airports can see their contents. Are they a security risk?

Go through security with it empty and re-fill it on the other side.

I think modern scanners can detect liquids, even through aluminium. And if it is detected, the staff appear to quite enjoy making sure you are delayed and inconvenienced.

Yes, it happened to me. I won't let it happen again...

But feel free to risk it.
I think sandy might be referring to (a perhaps empty) bottle in his suitcase rather than in hand luggage

I've bought one so that I can avoid using plastic ones. The thought just struck me security might not let it on the plane, or they might want to examine it.
Oh, yes. They are very common in China and other parts of Asia.

Also, China has hot water dispensers on both sides of security.

Might be best send it through security separately, like the liquids and laptops, so that you can show it is empty.

If they detect it in your bag, they might try to inconvenience you.
Not part of the answer Sandy......but when do you set off on your new adventure, and is it an imposition to request that you keep us updated once again? So many of us enjoyed your last magical adventure. Not least myself.

I'm going next week. This time the walk is from Porto to Santiago. It's probably the easiest Camino, lots of boardwalks and beaches.

I'll post reports.
No problem getting mine through on previous flights, just make sure it's empty before going through security.
That looks like a brilliant "holiday" walk Sandy. Can be done in 6 days but I hope that you are going to spin it out and have some quality leisure time. Maia,(perhaps unless you head for Lavra) Vila do Conde, Esponsend, Viana, Caminha, Valenca, looks wonderful. Hope the sun shines and a cool breeze refreshes you.
Bon Voyage, Sandy. :-)
I will be following you with interest Sandy. Best wishes for a good Camino.
