Do electricity suppliers have to tell you when your tariff is coming to an end and also that they offer cheaper tariffs than the one they have put you on to?

Although I don't know for certain, I suspect the answer to both parts of your question is No. To do so (i.e. by regulation/law) would be seen as unduly affecting the commercial environment, cramp the suppliers' style - that is normally just not the British way of doing things. Fortunately (for some) EU regulation in this and any/all fields will soon not apply to the UK. Such things as the mobile roaming regulations, passenger rights, etc. may well disappear in their present form once the new regime comes about - the UK is aiming to become a commercial paradise to attract all the expected super trade deals to be had from those foreign countries which will rush in like puppies to their master.

well British gas do. You get warned that your tariff will end on such and such a date, get told what tariff you will be moved to if you do nothing and get told at every single bill whether they have a better tariff for your circumstances.

they do usually write, or e mail with the fact of your contract coming to an end. Best to call them and negotiate a rate that you are both happy with.

Indeed. And if you have 49 days or less to run on your current tariff you can change suppliers without penalty regardless of what your contract says. This means you can get a new deal in place without any time pressure before your old one runs out.
