If you live in a mountainous area near to rivers and streams, is it not a forgone conclusion that some time or other you are going to experience some sort of flooding, sometimes worse than other times. I can take you to places were flooding reached higher levels back as far as the 1890 onwards. There's always a price to pay for a serine view weather it be sea front or river bank.

not being naive, watching the news this morning many people who live in mountainous areas are likely to be hit, with rain cascading down the hill, and creating huge flooding, i feel sorry for them, as they were hit many times over the last few years, but if it's climate change then i haven't a clue how to combat that,
TC , if we flood it’ll be a miracle as we are very high up for the river to reach us but seeing the devastation in the Y Dales etc is awful, yes, always that price to pay sadly
I suppose so, teacake. But I guess the risk is worth the view and peace and quiet. I live right by the sea, and the tides have looked quite threatening recently, but I wouldn’t want to move.

a somewhat acidic term - amino acidic.....

It is awful for your home or business to be hit, but you can't have your cake and eat it, as they say. A lot of these businesses do very well for themselves in the good months with tourists. There's lots of drawbacks living in a large town, and advantages, as per living in the dales. You have folk waiting and fuming at airports because their flights are cancelled, well sorry but if you book a weeks holiday were you need to fly in February expect a problem. Do they really want to risk taking off with kids and maybe end up in a pile at the end of the runway.
i actually do feel sorry for those who have booked flights, i believe it's half term so they may not be able to get another later on in term time..

The point is emmie, they don't cancel flights for the fun of it. I'd rather have disappointed kids then dead ones.
What is naive is authorities thinking it's fine to permit building in flood areas knowing they are causing misery for many just so some commercial concern can make a fast buck. One wonders why they are willing to be so inept.

That's a good point OG, but no one forces you to buy a home were they build them, you have to be responsible for your own decisions. Its not difficult to work out that a valley plot may flood.

By what I've seen on TV not many have made an effort to protect their front or back door with sand bags, this just being a basic protection that can work were flood levels are on average 3/4 feet, again you have to take some responsibility for yourself.

I'm dam sure if I purchased a home next to a river I would carry a stock of sand bags in my back garden all year round.
