My best friend of 70years was yesterday diagnosed with having bone cancer, and I'm finding that very difficult to cope with.
We became friends on our first day of school in 1951 and have been best friends ever since.
I want to be strong for her, but I find myself crying every time I think of her.
All I want to do is go and give her a big hug, but I know I can't.
How do you cope with this?
I'm sure lots of you have probably had much harder things to deal with, but I haven't , and this is why I can't cope.

Barsel, I hope you got some rest last night even though you answered my post in the wee small hours.

I do understand where you are coming from. I think we are of a similar age and we both have our dearest, long-standing friend living many miles from us.

5 years ago (tomorrow) my friend had a heart attack. When she was discharged from hospital she went back to her home where she had to look after herself.

I quickly booked my ferry, drove through England and Wales and had a drive through the early hours in Ireland. I stayed there for 2 weeks to do everything I could for her. Admittedly there was no lockdown then.

I am a very practical sort of person so I find it easier to be present and do what ever needs to be done. As your friend has a supportive family I can see that there is less comparison from that point on.

My friend and I spend hours chatting on video link, every day. The support we give each other is immeasurable and that defines our friendship in a nutshell. We are very honest with each other.

I am taking my OH to hospital soon for biopsies for bone cancer so accept my best wishes for your friend and yourself.
Not an easy time, Barsel. Keep the lines of communication open and go from there. Best wishes to everyone concerned x
Choux - that’s incredible what you did. What an amazing friend!
Barsel, am hoping you are feeling a tad more able to cope with things today - I know it’s incredibly hard x
Smow, what we do out of love is never incredible.

I am truly blessed to have this friend.
