Have had this said many times, always choose bad news first.
Bad news.
Bad news first and then anything else is a bonus.
^^^ I'm not so sure about 237SJ's answer:

Bad news: "You're going to die next Monday".

Good news: "You've won that dream holiday you've always wanted. It starts next Tuesday".

;-)
^ That only works if you are not told both bad and good news though.
Art dealer to artist: "I've got good news and bad news for you."
Artist: "What's the good news?"
Art dealer: "I've sold every one of your paintings."
Artist: "OK, what's the bad news?"
Art dealer: "The buyer wanted to know if your works would increase in value after you died."
Artist: "What's so bad about that?"
Art dealer: "The buyer was your doctor."
Doctor to patient - "I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is, your condition is terminal.

The good news is, that nurse you really fancy? I've got a date with her tonight!!"
Bad news first, then the good news can cheer you up!
