I'm sure there is an element of visual 'underlining' in the image.

A stranger coming in from outside to take the character away, rather than a neighbor who is likely to spend the entire journey to the station / airport quizzing the character about a possible return, with cameras and microphones to capture the conversation for the viewers' benefit.

Yes, but that would not allow for the dramatic image of someone 'finally' leaving, which a black cab, and no internal dialogue, provide.
