Twice this week alone I’ve heard this said, I want to say
“ No,you can borrow” the person you borrow of is the ‘lender’

there are compounds that just add to the confusion - "rent off/from"
landlords let on a lease

BUT reader - rent and let is the same word in French - loyer
and mu auld fave - buy and sell is the same word in Old Nubian ( you know the chaps with the big...) and as Armbruster memorably points out in Dongolawi Nubian = it has the sense of transfer property.
