Very True Canary..  Thatcher was all for the channel tunnel .Britains first fixed connection to the European mainland and it happened on her watch it was a game changer and if she was alive now and could see the damage Brexit had done to her beloved tunnel. She would never forgive TTT.

Yes I shared the "dream" of the single market that's what the EUSSR should have been. Instead it morphed into an isidious unelected bureaucratic dictatorship. If you think TGL wanted that then you are deluded. TGL correctly saw the benefits of cooperation and a common market, we all did and do. Instead the EUSSR has been infected with narrow minded autocratic bureaucrats that only seek power to put the EUSSR into their own defined straight jacket. Essentially they are an EUreich.

In all fairness to the Cons though .Thatcher did insist that the tunnel was built by the private sector  (joe public had no say in the matter)...In which no doubt her husband Dennis and son Mark were involved   on the,, erm ...Financial side of things.

If you read the article, you will find that Brexit had nothing to do with the tunnel's lack of appeal. You will also note that the article itself shows a considerable lack of knowledge Firstly there’s this:

“Already it will not be possible to travel directly from Amsterdam to London for at least six months from June as the station there is being rebuilt to cope with full trains of passengers.”

The reason Eurostar services cannot travel to Amsterdam is because the Dutch rail authorities have failed to incorporate into their plans for the station’s modernisation facilities for Eurostar to operate. 

Then there’s this:

"...as illustrated by the cancellation of all services on Saturday because of the flooding of a tunnel on the route. If the route were perceived as it should be – as a key part of the national infrastructure – there would be contingency plans to ensure that services were maintained."

The only way to provide resilience for Eurostar services to run between the tunnel and London would be to build a duplicate railway line. Current Eurostar trains would be "out of gauge" (i.e they're too big) to use the legacy lines in Kent. As well as that they are incompatible with the electrical supply. The legacy lines operate on 750v dc provided by a third rail; Eurostar trains use 25kv ac provided by overhead wires. 

I don't know what dreams Mrs Thatcher had but the Channel Tunnel does not do as well as it should because of its inflexibility. Its car shuttle service is unattractive. It's a little quicker that the ferries but on a ferry you can have a meal and a drink. On the rail shuttle you sit in your car, eat a sandwich and you get a karzhi and a light bulb for company.

The point is that Lady Thatcher wouldn't have adopted the cowardly running away expounded by weak-willed Farage and Johnson.  She would have REMAINed and fought (and won).

It was just a pity she was a Tory, the country needs someone with balls to run it; something lacking in Boris, Rishi, and Keir.
