I'm not sure she should resign given she disclosed it  before her appointment to the cabinet. It raises questions for Sir Keir about why she was appointed.

I suspect there is more to this than what we are given.  Highly inlikey Plod would bother prosecuting to a "mistake" let alone get it past the CPS and a conviction.

And that is why she has "resigned".  They will be hoping it goes away in a few weeks.

She is still MP.  Hope she answers the questions honestly every time she renews her car, house, medical and life insurances.  'Have you ever been convicted of fraud.....'  As far as I know spent convictions still have be declared in these circumstances

I don't know the circumstances but since she claims reporting it stolen was a case of being mistaken on her part then I suspect no one could prove otherwise.

 

Sounds like an excuse to me. Possibly to put "clear water" between her and the present government, and it's decisions/strategies ?

She did something stupid a long time ago, paid the price, probably learnt a lesson, should be forgiven and allowed to move on with her life.

And yes Khandro for many offences I'd agree with you.  However fraud or theft should rule you out from certain jobs, especially a Government Minister. It's not quite the same as smoking whacky baccy at uni is it?

Personally I wouldnt call 10 years a long time ago for this type of offence.

I really suspect there is more to this than we are being told at the moment which is why she has "resigned" (more likley been pushed).

Some jobs demand better, being a cabinet minister is one of them.

Not informing her employer and the police was the silly mistake.

Continuing to insist it was stolen and answering 'no comnent' was criminal

Being found guilty is difficult to actually being guilty in reality. Humans and their systems aren't infallible, especially court cases where one might be persuaded things will go against you anyway, and that lying when you plead may reduce your punishment.

OG, there is no doubt.  The police became aware of the location of the stolen phone when it was switched on in her house. She still insisted it was stolen and refused to explain herself.
