How do lesser flamingos defend or camouflage themselves in the wild?

Beard, glasses and a baseball bat usually does the trick.

They hide behind the greater flamingos.

They dont- its effectively safety in numbers- huge flocks so an individual stands less chance of being picked off.

I am not aware of any method that a flamingo, greater or lesser, with which it can defend itself. The beak is useless for inflicting any significant amount of damage and the wings are too fragile to be use as weapons.
burnhal is right on the nose with the huge flock safety. carrot99's contribution may appear flippant, but I believe there is a certain amount of truth in it. The lessers do frequently join the greater flock, or the other way around. Whether they do so for greater safety or they come down to join the food supply feast is open for debate.
