See the little box that shows the recent posts......

well it should be longer, show mabey the last 10 posts, so sometimes while you typing a reply, you may miss one you are involved in......

I'd agree with that. 4 posts isn't really long enough, especially at busy times.

Mine doesn't appear to 'refresh' on demand, any more. I can turn to a new post and immediately get 4 new recent posts....is it just me ?

No that happens to me too. I guess it updates each time you move around the site.
