Check it out at the CAB or do you have a solicitor locally who has a free advice evening? In fact you can do it online for just a few pounds, you just have to declare you wish to be known by the new name, that's all.

Out of curiosity, how do the tax office, bank and employer know you? I would assume by your original name.
I changed my name by deed poll over 15 years ago. When I got married last year I couldn't find the document and didn't know which solicitors I used. The registrar simply put on the wedding documents "Mr X formerly known as Mr Y".
Felt like Symbol/Prince or whatever he is known as know!
