Cover Supervisor in School

Does anyone know the pay scale for the job of Cover Supervisor in Schools - where you cover the job of teachers who are absent for one reason or another - but are obviously not a qualified teacher?

In Scotland, if you are not a qualified teacher then you cannot cover classes.

As far as I know you have to be a qualified teacher to be a supply teacher. Supply teachers have a much harder job dealing with behaviour and discipline than regular classroom teachers- it would just be cruel to send an unqualified one in!! Roughly speaking, lecturers get �20 an hour, and unqualified lecturers get a "demonstrator's" fee of about �10 an hour. This may be similar to supply teaching, but I have a feeling you have to be qualified to do it.

As far as I know, you cannot be left alone with students unless you have QTS - qualified teacher status. You can however do a course that allows you to assist a QT.

You can be a cover supervisor without having qualified teacher status. The pay scale is grade 5 and can pay anything from �15,000 to �17,000 a year. You basically supervise students in a class who will be doing work that has been set by a qualified teacher.

I am presently a Cover Supervisor - I work term time only and receive a salary approx �11,500 (�8.50ph).

I am not a qualified teacher - I do no lesson preparation or marking. There is more to the job than just Supervising, very rarely do I have time to do other things when I am in a classroom eg: data inputting etc.
