We have a relative with the nickname "pasha" born in 1893 - name stuck all his life as is on his gravestone ....... does anyone know what "pasha" means and in what language please?

It is Turkish and it means a great person.

Thanks Tigger - that's fab - a london restaurnt called Pasha have replied and said it translates roughly as "lord" but there is now direct word in English for it - so pleased with your reply...... makes sense as this ancestor was a high achieving boxer in the early 20th century. Thanks again.
What was his surname? I knew a guy called George Turk years ago who came back from the Army with the nickname 'Pasha', for obvious reasons now.

He was alfred Isaac Jones - Pasha was his boxing name.
