A while ago I got insurance off internet for my boyfriend and we'd guessed his no claims as being about 4 years. He had a letter through to say they needed proof of no claims bonus and if we wouldn't prove it they would put his premium up. I eventually managed to get proof he actually had 7 years no claims, so does this mean they should actually be giving him money back now?

It depends what the company's no claims maximum is. I have 33 years no claims but my insurance max is 5 years.
