several years back sky used analogue transmissions and used a system called Videocrypt to encode it, videocrypt used a relatively weak algorithm to encrypt the signal and could be cracked within a couple of days of the encryption being "rotated" to a new algorithm. then they unppgraded to videocrypt2 which although slightly better still was fairly week and easy to crack (I've seen people crack it in a few days)
Then the digital revolution took over and sky started using a method called VideoGuard to secure the transmissions, which as well as being a far far more secure encryption even stand alone it is also very often "married" to the serial number of the viewing box that you are using.
So even if VideoGuard is cracked (and it has been) it still wont work unless the viewing card is used in a box that has the correct serial number.
Is this really a suitable subject for chatterbank though :)
