The BL Austin Princess was a wedge-shaped horror.

But there was another posher marque in the series that had a kind of rolls royce grille. What was it called?

Wolseley 18/80 I think they only sold it in the first year of production and it was the last car to carry the Wolseley name, it was also called the Austin Ambassador later on.
Austin Vanden-Plas Princess.
Leather seats, walnut dash and trim, individual courtesy door lights, walnut pull-down picnic trays in rear of front seats.... my first car..............aaaahhhhhh
The one you are thinking of was the Austin Sheerline. That evolved into the Van Den Plas Princess. It was big and black with wings and running boards a big radiator grille plus huge Lucas headlamps.

The Princess name was revived for the wedgy thing.

Ah, we're getting closer.

It wasn't quite a Vanden Plas, but it was kindof halfway between.

Imagine an Austin Princess with a Van Plas grille, but with the bonnet angled down, like on a Princess.

Yeah thanks, 123everton, it was like the Wolseley Saloon although can't quite remember the number of headlights n stuff - I was a boy!

Was it a posh car? There was this girl I fancied, but her Dad had a car. What chance did I have? So sad. I've no idea what it was like to be in the back seat.

The car. Why was it so rare? Was it just that the production was so variable that no-one could be sure of when it became available?'

Was it an Ambassador?
This is all very confusing. If It is not the big square limo, the other Princess was the big Pininfarina version of the Austin Cambridge/Morrris Oxford range, the Austin Westminster Wolsely 6/110.
The Vanden Plas Princess was the top of the range but with collaboration with Rolls Royce it gained a RR engine and became a Vanden Plas Princess R.
