I wouldn't necessarily say popular, more of a necessity if one cannot get a flight.

On the radio they were discussing the problem of the extra expenses accrued by stranded passengers, should the costs be borne by the airlines?

Personally I think there should be a world wide fund, set up to take these eventualities on board.

Yes, trains and ships will be used more especially as this volcano could potentially go on on for months and years sporadically causing aviation havoc - but i think with ash + austerity coming to the UK a lot more people will stay at home or holiday in this country far more often.
