My sister is around 24 weeks pregnant. She's just started to have a leaky breast. The 1st time it happened, she felt quite unwell. She had a temp today and her boob was agony. She went to out of hours doctors today and they prescribed antibiotics. He said it was very unusual. Does that mean she will keep getting mastitis now? She's still got a long way to go!

Apparently putting cabbage leaves in your bra (well, her bra) should help.
You can get some gel filled 'things' which you can place in your bra (either hot or cold) which really help - http://www.mothercare...Q&n=68660031&mcb=core
Alternate hot and cold water splashing can help too, as of course does the cabbage leaves and it's very painful too, poor girl.
Cabbage leaves? Does that really work?
Mastitis in pregnancy is not uncommon and is not considered to be serious or life threatening in any way.
It is not usually caused by infection even though there may be a temperature and a feeling of unwell.

Yes, it may reoccur in this pregnancy and subsequent pregnancies.

Not sure about the cabbage leaves ;-) but the cold compresses appeal to me.
Yes I don't like the idea of the cabbage leaves...yuck

Thanks Sqad and everyone else. I've had mastitis before but that was after my daughter was born so I know how painful it is. A few people have said about the cabbage leaves. I think she's feeling a bit better today but I've recommended the mothercare things now (thanks mamyalynne).
Doesn't help that her boobs are getting absolutely huge now! Her bump is tiny in comparison lol.
