Hi
could someone please look at Gertrude Cowap on the 1891 census for Manchester please? She is aged 21 born manchester , living with her sister and brother-in-law James and mary E Bretland. i cannot work out her occupation, I think it may be Fustiers machinist but then the 's' could be an 'r!'
Hi Dotty, sorry to butt in this is not my field of expertise but might it be Fustian that is being referred to, Fustian is a stiff woven mostly cotton cloth often made int jackets for the working classes in 19th century.
The transcriber on FMP thought it was 'furriers machinist', and I agree on this one. Looks like an enumerator's mark through the word, like a backward L, also done on the entry below on 'police constable' and on 'brewers cellarman' a bit further down.
thanks for that rose, I was reading it as furriers i think but it just didn'e seem like they'd use a machinist but then they would have linings in the coats/hats etc. so yes it is probably right, thanks.
