Disappearing E-mail

I don't understand why a huge portion of my collected E-mail disappears in my Inbox.........once it even came back about a week later. Today all of my September E-mail disappeared with the exception of what just came within the last two hours. That means I lost a bunch that I have not replied to. Could this be a virus ?

What email system do you have?

Could it be that you may have accidentally clicked on the date on the top and put the email in a different order?

Thank you muchlovex, I have tried that solution and am awqre of the re-arranging that occurs when I hit the date button.
