My wife got an email saying "One of your friends has sent you a birthday card" with a dodgy attachment. The trouble was, it was her birthday and so she opened it. It took me a full day to get a working machine back.
carrottop10, they really don't need better things to do. Look at it this way, if one out of a hundred people that open these emails allows them to infiltrate your computer and seek banking details etc while your online, the scam pays for itself.
They just sit back and wait for that one person to provide them with the details they need to empty bank accounts etc. What could be easier?

I'd agree that a clean install is a little drastic, but as a precaution it might be wise to do a full scan of your computer with malwarebytes because it's more aimed at detecting spyware and malware than most anti-virus software.
