I have a message on my Skype download menu : 'Known to cause stability or safety issues'. I hardly ever use Skype so should I uninstall it, and reinstall it when I am going to use it ? Will I have the same name and password if I reinstall it ?

What do you mean by "My Skype download menu"?

Your Skype username and password are registered with Skype.
If you uninstall and re-install the software they won't change, though you may have to re-enter them.

I use Skype for 90% of my calls, to other Skype users, mobiles and landlines. Never experienced any significant problems.

Thanks rojash, I'm not very good at explaining things. I might uninstall and then install again when smurf-son goes on another gap year ....
