Nice day for us Catholics that John XXIII and John Paul II were today made saints. Ceremonials beautifully done by Vatican. Many people happy.

Thanks anneasquith...
I often wonder why the death of John Paul 1 is so shrouded in mystery. Nobody seems to ever mention him.
Question Author
The sad, untimely death of John Paul I is not 'shrouded in mystery' One writer, just one at the time, made a number of claims, none of which have been substantiated by anyone.
It is not true that we don't think of the man but, as he was in office less than a month, it is hardly surprising that Catholics don't often refer to him. That said, the kind of papacy that he seemed to be intent on pursuing seems be echoed in the new pope so, perhaps, hopefully, his brief legacy, modesty and humility will be amplified by someone now able so to do...
Yes I hope so, he did seem a lovely pious Pope r.i.p.
Slightly less happy for this disabled man in Italy this week, when the statue commemorating John Paul's canonisation fell on him and crushed him to death ...

yes, I think we saw this item when the incident happened jj.
I missed it at the time, anne, but I've been with my BF this weekend, and he was in Italy during the week, and he mentioned it, otherwise I'd have missed it altogether.
This is probably very controversial but I was brought up in the catholic faith and think ANY religion is a load of twoddle. Too many wars have been fought in the name of god. WHY.
everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Anne. you really are a......... Best keep stum
anne is jolly.

Shame about the statue, though.

God is nice too, actually. Some Colombian bloke who is ill, prays to the memory of John Paul, gets better. Attributed to god.

Statue of John Paul falls on man who is disabled, so can't get out of the way fast enough. NOT attributed to god.

You see. God only does nice things. Bad things are just ... well, just tough titties, really.
LOL jj, '' anne is jolly (grumpy ) :)
Noooo, you're not, anne.

If you were grumpy, we'd throw old fruit, and jeer.

Or am I confusing AB with a mediaeval village? (an easy mistake!)

Besides ... I think you'll find ... the correct spelling is ... gwumpy.

As in ... ohhhh, and you must be gwumpy!

:0)
I think, Ms Jayne, that you have encapsulated the meaning of life for some and the futility of same for others. :)

Religion is something I generally pay limited attention to however, I've found this story quite interesting because its writing new history.

Because of where the new pope is from it piqued my interest (spending half my life in the Falklands it would) however he seems like a decent man and if any church can have a decent person in charge then maybe they are half way to winning the battle. I was brought up Church of Scotland but have no religion to speak of, plenty of faith but thats a different matter
