BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH!!!

My partner is in a foul mood so please help.... He turns on his computer, the screen goes as far as the log on screen then goes black, he can still move the cursor though, he tries to put it in safe...

1983 Cutlass Supreme Brougham Vin number 1G3AM47A9DM441008.i Dont think that if it has been sold that the owner knows it has been stolen.i would be willing to pay to get it back.
