We have recently added this feature to the site:

http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/AB-Editors-Blog/Question1238414.html

This is a small lightbox which appears to non logged in users on the second page they visit of the site.

We said we'd come back to a few of you with some stats as to whether it has worked.

Here's a graph of the number of sign-ups from the 15th April to today:

(click to see a close up in a new tab)

As you can see sign ups have increased a great deal.

Someone asked if it was staying. The answer is: Yes, for now. We need to see what the graph looks like after a few weeks to see if we're turning away those who didn't sign up in the first wave. But we'll get to that later.

In the short term we've got a load of new members on the way :)

The graph's not working.
Oops ... and there it is. Can't see the figures though.

"Are they not all one particualr undesirable former user Ed? :)"

No more than normal, the "bonus members" seem to be "on top" of the usual activity.
Thanks, A click works.

Added the start point of the new lightbox.

As you can see, we had around 50 sign-up a day previously. This has almost doubled for most days (and obviously spiked wildly on the weekend!).

We're proceeding with caution however as we want to be sure we're not going to upset anyone in the long run.

:)
The only snag I've seen is that (on my phone) if I'm not signed in sometimes an advert will cover the "close" X in the top corner of the lightbox. Easy enough to refresh the page to lose the lightbox though.
We had a mega troll fest on sunday, with some 'new members' signing up and being suspended in the space of 2 minutes, are you able to knock them off so you get a true reading?
And yes Ed, I know you told us not to feed the trolls/spammers, and yes, slap me on the wrist, I did, I was bored, and theyalways seem to be like that itch that you know that you shouldn't scratch, ......but you just have to.
Sorry ;-)

When you using the "main" site rather than m.theanswerbank.co.uk ?

I'll have a look and see if there's something we can do about that - I think it's fairly unavoidable though.

We don't do slapped wrists, we do suspensions. Just don't.

It is a true reading, we haven't excluded that kind of user from the previous data either. It sounds like the mods were working hard over the weekend.
Main site - Android phone - default browser.

"Main site - Android phone - default browser."

Does the lightbox "run away from you" if you try an close it?
No - just if I'm not fast enough to click on the close X it can be hidden by an advert from the underlying page.
Question Author
Can you "click away"? You should be able to click on the greyed out bit on the page to dismiss the lightbox? I'm not saying it's the perfect solution, but it might get you there.
Aha - yes that works - click anywhere on the greyed out patch & it clears - I was being to fussy in thinking I needed to hit the X
