You may have seen that there was an oft expressed niggle about Best Answers in Crosswords this morning and then the lack of courtesy in acknowledgement or thanks from the person who raised the question.
How about doing away with BAs in Crosswords and picking up on the first correct answer and measuring that? Is that technically possible, say the recipient to press a 'correct' button on the answer.
Sometimes the best answer could be one including the parsing, not just the first correct answer. I agree BA doesn't really work in crosswords. And with the thank you issue.
danny k has 2626 b/answers i have 46 that means nothing to me, if rarely i do help someone i'm not bothered if they say thx's or not that's just me tho it seems it bothers other people which is down to them!
Lack of thank you's is no big deal, and only have best answers in real topics i.e. not crosswords, Q&P, CB, jokes (maybe one or two others) or simply don't show the count in a user profile.
Best Answers appear to be pointless throughout all Topics in AB........ Unless something is done to put right the failing that AB has of awarding supposed badges to people who qualify for such awards the nomination of Best Answer is a complete waste of time...... Although I still like to be nominated.☺☺☺
I often forget the BA, usually I thank the ones who help me with a query. There has been an occasion where someone questioned my BA choice! As far as awarding BA in Crosswords it's pointless when there are several who give the same answer.
As chelle says, you could argue a case for a Best Answer which included a clear parsing of a very obscure clue, but apart from that I agree. A correct answer is a correct answer.
It's not an issue for me either - it amuses me that sometimes a response which hasn't actually answered the question gets BA. I can't say I get gripped about people giving or getting BAs, either way.
