The Ad That Must Not Be Named...

As we are all well aware we have had an incredibly irritating issue with a particularly clever ad that seemed determined to interrupt specific people on our lovely site.

We have been working hard over the weekend to get to the root of this. And our techie gnomes have discovered it likes to be named, so any threads naming this ad (beginning with a 'g', and ending with an 's') were triggering the ad to show.

For this reason we have deleted all threads, both old and new, that mention this terrible ad by name. It's not that we're deleting your threads because we don't care - quite the opposite!

The advice of 'please clear your cache' still stands true, if you have seen the ad, please clear your cache (comment below if you need any help on your specific browser, but a quick google should help you). And let's never talk of this terrible ad again! Doing so will cause it to rear it's ugly head!

Your post was a great help. A few of us tried to support the site management over this issue. It's quite hard – as a site admin – to do comprehensive research without trying many computer systems, many browser types and so on.

It's great to see a positive response from the management.

Incidentally, one thing that can help is that if you see the yellow/orange Ally-X-pre55 advert indicating a 50%-off sales, then try to refresh your page as fast as you can until that ad no longer appears.

Thanks Kidas, we got it sorted in the end (hopefully).

I never suffered the problem myself so it wasn’t affecting my enjoyment of AB. I might have worked out how it was working earlier if I’d had the same aggro as TTT and others were suffering.

Kidas, Gromit, and everyone else who has actively tried to support us in getting to the bottom of this - your help has been hugely appreciated. Seeing our AB members get so frustrated over this ad (and rightly so) has certainly made our beards grey a little prematurely through all the worry!

There is a post from Nov/Dec time about the site that must not be mentioned, in which ABers warn that it is dodgy and link to bad reviews.

If you haven’t already zapped that one, I suggest you do so.

(the conspiracy theorist in me did wonder if that thread was the reason this site was targetted with the pernicious ad).

A cursory search suggested two other threads talking about it, but it seems that the offending posts have been removed already. I am not sure if this is as effective as killing the threads altogether:

Just tried that thread from a Google link and it has gone.

Anyone posting other instances of it being mentioned should not post a link, but instead state the poster, date and the 1234567.html number from the url.
