In my opinion, it's most likely that it's the element itself that's failed. A new immersion heater only costs around thirty quid (from Wickes, et al). They're fairly easy to replace without the need to call in a plumber. You simply need a specialist spanner (£3.50 from Wickes), an electrical screwdriver and a bit of patience. Assuming that you're confident with electrical wiring, the only risk is that of cracking the top of the cylinder when you tighten the new heater into place. If you manage to do that, you'll soon know about it because you'll quickly have water all over the place! (Written from personal experience!).

Yes that is it Buen, thank you, but there is no way in this world that I will attempt to fix it myself (that made me chuckle that did). It looks as though I will have to get a plumber in, but hope he isn't one that charges an absolute fortune, as the last one I had the misfortune to get in did !! I'll have to ask around to see if anyone knows a good plumber locally. I'm still hoping it's just the thermostat.
