Why doesn't it work in the new text box please?

It's probably because AB's techies have coded the box as an 'input' field, rather than as a 'textarea' or 'contenteditable' one. 

The default is for spell checking to be off in 'input' fields and line 1039 in the coding ( <input type=text spellcheck="false" placeholder="spellcheck=false"><br /> ) suggests that's what's happening here.
