Why is the word nuclear now pronounced nuculer.  Even Jack Bauer on 24 is doing it.

Perhaps he is modelling himself on Homer Simpson as this is his preferred pronunciation.

It was good to hear Pres David Palmer pronouncing it correctly tonight on 24.

Isn't it a long-standing joke in American programmes that this word is frequently mispronounced?  Homer works in a nuclear power station, so you'd think he'd know how to pronounce it by now - that's what makes it funny.  The all-time best allusion to this (I think) is in Family Guy, when Lois (WASP wife) correctly pronounces the word and Peter (uneducated slob husband) smugly retorts: "It's pronounced NUCULER, you moron, the S is silent."
