Clock Work Orange is also featured in the ad.

I think the picture of the old style plane is reference to the Alfred Hitchcock movie when the plane swoops down and nearly hits Cary Grant.I'm not too sure what the movie is called.

Think we've got most of the ones that appeared in today's Sunday Times culture magazine - The Great Escape, Birdman of alcatraz, taxi driver, Leon, Rd to Perdition, English Patient (aeroplane?), Superman, Psycho (old woman out the window?), Magnolia, Day after tomorrow - having a few probs with the car in the middle though, and the woman on top of the building with the gun (Lara Croft/Nikita?) - any ideas?...
A few more: the 39 Steps - the Birds (rook Street shop!) the Hustler.  The Italian job (the minis).
Hi,

It's a picture of my home town St Albans. I couldn't believe it when i saw that advert in the Lodnon Metro. What a claim to fame, ey?

Can anyone email me a copy of it so i can email my fellow St Albaners and I see if i can name any of the films.

Thanks
Stiffey

The film with the plane is North by Northwest.

Other films in this ad are Herbie (Beetle car), Withnail and I (man with plastic bags on feet), The Italian Job (three minis), Fight Club ("I like myself" grafitti).

I've got a completely different picture - a pebbly beach with a pier (Guardian Weekend 9/7). I've got the easy ones - Apocalypse Now, Jaws, Dr No, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Piano, Open Water, Chariots, but I'm stuck on "White Sta..." , the sunbather on the RHS, the submarine, the tank traps (could be any WWII movie) and those toothpaste tube things in the sky. Anyone got these?

Question Author

We had shirley valentine (plastic table & chair)
Kez (the perigrin falcon on side)
Jaws (the Shark)
French Luitenants woman (on pier)
The Piano (obvious)
Chariots of Fire (runners on beach)
Appocalpse now (burnt papers etc)
Sexy Beast (sunbather)
Hunt for Red october (Sub)

Whats missing

On beach:

Saving Private Ryan (defence emplacements)The pier looks like 1941; and the deck chairs could be Quadrophenia

St Albans:

Arlington Road-sign; The Commitments (sandwich board) Birdman of Alcatraz (window) Earthquake; is the rooster Jean de Florette?Taxi Driver. Colour of Money (guy with pool cue, but the other one doesn't look like Paul Newman). The red balloon is familiar....

The helicopters are definitely Apocalypse Now. So are your 'burnt papers' the objects in the LHS of the sky? They must be from something else??

And what's that comet thing in the sky at the centre?

And surely the broken bike lock(?) at the bottom of the pier handrail (RHS) and the Missing Persons notices must be significant.

I don't have the St Albans pic, but a "familar red balloon" could be from the Lamorisse's 'Le Ballon Rouge':

http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0048980/
Comet could be either Armageddeon or Deep Impact.  There is one more ad also which is a Park Scene

My girlfriend reckons rooster in St Albans scene is from City of God. Picture of this is on local news site; google St Albans and Stella Artois.

What about; plant pot (top left) Falling frogs and Scottish flag? Whats the Magnolia ref?

In the ad set in the park i have got:

elephant man,(man on bench)donnie darko(sky and engine part in sky), texas chainsaw massacre(hand and chainsaw), the blair witch project(people walking to woods),the ring(the well), the exorcist(man at lampost), the birds(DUH!), the shining(tricycle)the red london bus i'm not sure, could be 28 days later?the man on the mower is bugging me cos i can't remember the film title, its based on a true story and i think david lynch directed it...

Think the guy on the lawn mower could be straight story by lynch but the guy looks too young so it might be forrest gump? The guy with the pony tail on the clock tower is Heat (Val Kilmer), frogs are magnolia, as to the missing notices - there are some in 28 days later but different format, hmmm.
The satellite dishes could be that JodieFoster film about making contact with aliens- called?
Can you give me URLs for the St. Albans and park pics? I can't find them.

Thanks

this is the st.albans pic.

as for the beach scene, the missing board is lost boys.

jodie foster film? contact.

could the flaming lanterns be empire of the sun?

any idea about the bike lock?

In the Herts 24 story they mention that there's around 20 in each ad and that in the St.Albans ad there's the following:
Clockwork Orange (3 guys in bowler hats, white suits, moloko cafe)
Superman (guy in phonebox)
Herbie (White VW Beetle)
The Italian Job (Red, White & Blue Mini's)
North by Northwest (the Bi-Plane)
and Earthquake (Cracks in road)
So that leaves about 14, so from what's been mentioned and from own observations i reckon:
39 Steps (shoe shop)
Taxi Driver (taxi)
Birdman from Alcatraz (birdcage in window)
Magnolia (frogs falling from sky)
Leon (plantpot on window ledge)
Colour of Money (pool players)
Fight Club ('I like myself' graffiti)
Arlington Road (street sign)
Withnail and I (man with bags on his feet)
Tomb Raider (female sniper)
Psycho (woman in window)
City of God/Jean de Florette (rooster)
the Committments (sandwich board - live irish band)

The last four i'm not 100 % sure about but that also leaves the following clues:

scottish flag
the lion & the unicorn (or is this linked to the committments?)
the churchill?
rook street (but this could be to avoid having the true name of the recruitment agency?)
And is there something in the top right window in the top right corner??
Sorry, forgot to add to that list Road to Perdition is that the photographer?
