...in the Lower Falls if our names had been different. Incidentally, as soon as I could, I changed mine from Gervaise to Gabriel.
That thought was prompted by a piece on local radio this morning. The host, Stephen Nolan, clearly thought the Kate Hopkins story from last week still had legs so he wheeled her on and got the expected responses.
But could there be something in what she said? Are some names irredeemably chavish?

Yes, I think they are but I wouldn't judge a child by their name or refuse to have them round to play.

How can you write a child off by their parents choice? And just because someone give their child a 'chavvy' name it doesn't mean they are of lower class, they are more likely to be celebrity magazine readers.
Sometimes it seems that parents, in an effort to call their children something "different", will resort to anything and it does produce some strange names.
Especially the alternative spelling ones such as Kloe, Courtnee and Hollee.
There's a Nevaeh living a few doors from me (Heaven backwards if you hadn't noticed)
Yes I think some names are chavvy but I wouldn't dare tell the parents that.
Would it be ok to call one's child Chav?

As it would score highly in post-modern irony
It would probably mutate into Chavrick or some such.
^ lol

I think Chavez would work well in our leafy suburbs
Hi ummm
"it doesn't mean they are of lower class, they are more likely to be celebrity magazine readers.

Whilst I hesitate to mention the word 'class', I do think avid celebrity magazine readers and celebrity followers might well fit into the lower intelligence bracket.

Notice I said 'avid'. I must admit to having a nice hour every so often in the hairdressers reading these magazines!!

I wonder do the people who give their child unusual names start threads about children with boring names?
If parents want to name their child something a bit different it would be wise to give it a more mainstream middle name so if it chooses a profession where a name such as dwayne or chardonnay may prove embarrassing then they have a choice to change it to something more appropriate.
Totally agree with ummmm's first post.

I did sort of agree with Kate Hopkins comment on This Morning, however, unlike her I wouldn't hold it against a child for having what I considered a Godawful name, and I certainly wouldn't stop my own child being friends with them.

I did that themorrigan, gave my child a boring middle name (Mary) even though her first name isn't unusual anyway, but she claims she hates her middle 'un :-(

I still am giggling that she hates 'geographic names' but has called her kid "India" .... daft bat.
^^^^ we could end up in the 2050's with a princess Chardonnay Olivia Windsor.
sunny

apparently 'India' isn't a place-name

I think it's actually a type of rubber
I think it is possibly more likely that its the types of parents who deliberately copy celebrity names that Katy Hopkins wants to avoid.

I did watch the clip here:

She didn't make her point very well.
Lucky the kid wasn't called after a village in France then Zeuhl ...

I can't imagine the thought processes behind anyone judging a child on his or her name, its disgraceful. However, the truth is people do make judgements on peoples names, on their accents and on where they live.
^ lol

easier to just call him Johnny
Good grief, just watched that video. Thanks ummmm. The woman is a nightmare! And ha ha ha regarding 'India' Silly moo!!
