thx vulcan...i googled dilly dilly and it gave the name of the man who produced the advert he said dilly dilly meant nothing ...lol whats the point
It means their lavender was green ... or blue.
I agree means nothing but it prompted me to revisit the Claudio Ranieri 'dilly ding dilly dong' video which lightened my my day - so thanks for that.
I'm 71 and I seem to remember this refrain in a few pop songs of the 60s period. Dilly, more up to date, is a slightly derogatory reference to people from the North of England.

Well I never knew that! I've certainly never heard it.
But I bet its being said in pubs all over the country!
My oh had an uncle Dilly, I never did find out why he was called that, I often thought maybe people thought he was a bit simple.

One suggestion is that the words "dilly" "dilly" replaced those of "diddle" "diddle" which were included in the lyrics of more bawdy songs about sex and drinking, apparently, written in the 17th century.
